Martial Arts
Karate - Instruction in the martial arts is provided at the Foothills Athletic Club by
instructors of the Center for Humane Living. The Center for Human Living is a non-profit martial
arts school that teaches the Korean Martial Art of Tang Soo Do. The Chief Instructor for the
Center for Humane Living is Sixth Dan Dr. Michael Foley, who resides and teaches in Paradise Valley.
The Center for Humane Living’s curriculum focuses on development of physical and mental martial arts
skills to enhance dealing with the pressures, stresses, and fears we all deal with in our day to day lives.
Peace - Students of the Center for Humane Living learn how to resolve conflicts without having
to resort to physical confrontation. A part of the curriculum teaches students the “Twelve Ways to
Deal with a Bully”, written by Terrence Webster-Doyle, director of the Martial Arts for Peace Association
in Middlebury, Vermont. This involves a study of peaceful ways to cope with bullies.
Do (DOH)- meaning “The Way“- Students of the Center for Humane Living learn the importance of
living life in a more peaceful way, to focus on the journey, and not the destination. An enlightened
study of the martial arts shares the ancient wisdom of Korean Tang Soo Do Masters, still valid and useful
in teaching Respect, Confidence, and Discipline. Students learn how to develop physical, mental, and
verbal skills in the Dojang (classroom) with Energy, Compassion, and Intensity.
Family - The Center for Humane Living’s curriculum is designed around the family. There are many
entire families that are students of the Center for Humane Living. This is an excellent opportunity to
spend time together and share with each other the study of the martial arts. Single people also enjoy the
family atmosphere and learning with new friends.
